bengkung belly binding

Origins

Wrapping the belly post birth is a common practice found in cultures all over the world. In Japan it is called Sarashi, in Malaysia they call it Bengkung and in Latin America it is referred to as Faja. Each tradition has a different style of wrapping. Malaysian Bengkung belly binding is becoming popular in America. Bengkung belly binding uses a long strip of linen wrapped and tied from your hips all the way up to just below the breasts on your rib cage.

Why?

There are many reasons “why” belly binding is something that’s been practiced for generations. Physically, belly binding promotes postpartum healing. It compresses the uterus to help decrease bleeding and help the uterus contract. The bengkung style wrap helps to slim the ribcage and hips which shift and move when a woman is pregnant. Belly binding provides pelvic and back support and also pulls together separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). It reduces fluid and air retention in the abdomen.

Spiritually, many people groups practice a form of belly binding to keep the abdomen and womb warm and balance their energies after birth. It also relieves the “empty” feeling many women feel after giving birth. Belly binding grounds and centers the body and nurtures the mother in a vulnerable time. It can also provide emotional support after pregnancy loss. Many women feel a connection to their roots and ancestors while wearing a binding wrap.

Belly binding supports your body after any type or outcome of birth.

Traditional vs. conventional

What is the difference between products like the Belly Bandit and traditional belly binding wraps? The biggest differences are the custom fit and the longer length. You won’t have to guess what size you will be after birth. The added length encompasses both your hips and your rib cage. Wrapping these body parts is essential for the healing benefits of postpartum belly binding. Another difference is the lack of boning, zippers, Velcro and other common notions that are part of garments like these. The soft fabric hugs your body and won’t dig in to you skin, you’ll be able to comfortably go about your day.
